What households say
And what the staff we place say too, which matters to us at least as much.
We do not name the households we act for, and so these words are attributed only by role and neighborhood, with the permission of the people who wrote or said them. We have not edited them, except to remove names.
We have had the same house manager for eleven years. Larchcombe found her in five weeks, and I am still not entirely sure how.
They came to the house, walked every room, and asked my husband one question about the dogs that nobody else had ever thought to ask.
Our nanny has been with us since our eldest was three weeks old. He is now eleven, and still asks her before he asks us.
My father had not been to the symphony in four years. He now goes every other Saturday, and complains about the tempo all the way home.
I have been on Larchcombe’s books for nineteen years and three households. I have never once been sent to a house I would not have chosen myself.
We asked for a chef. They sent us a chef, and told us, very kindly, that what we actually needed was a cook-housekeeper. They were right.
The trial dinner was the best meal we had eaten that year. The thousandth dinner has been better.
When my wife died, it was Larchcombe who found the companion who has kept me company since. She beats me at cribbage, which nobody else has managed.
In four years the family has never once asked me what I do all day. In this work that is the highest compliment there is.
We spend half the year in Seattle and half in Zürich, and for eleven years the same housekeeper has opened each house for us a week before we arrive.
Larchcombe told me at my first interview that the job was to make the house invisible. It took me two years to understand what they meant.
My grandmother used Mrs. Thayer. My mother used Mrs. Rendle. I use the other Mrs. Rendle. None of us has ever used anyone else.
I was a waiter for twelve years before I came to them. They put me on the butlers’ course, and then in a house on the lake. I have not carried a tray in a restaurant since.
She has been with us six years and I have never once found a thing where I left it. I have always found it where it should have been.
